World Autism Awareness Day 24′

World Autism Awareness Day, observed annually on April 2nd, is a significant global initiative aimed at increasing public awareness and understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This special day serves as an opportunity to spread awareness about autism spectrum disorder and celebrate the diversity of all individuals who live with autism. Join Key Connections not only on this day, but for the entire month of April and beyond, as we aim to spread the word about inclusion, acceptance, and the importance of autism awareness.

When did World Autism Awareness Day begin?

The United Nations General Assembly designated April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day in 2007, marking it as an officially observed day of awareness! Since then, awareness for autism has grown significantly. In the United States, 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with ASD—many of us, our loved ones, our children, and our peers are part of the autism community, which is why it is so important for all of us to practice being compassionate and inclusive with each other.

How can I support the autism community?

Supporting individuals with ASD entails providing access to education, therapy, and other important resources. At Key Connections, we provide access to invaluable social skills resources and proven ABA therapy services. But support extends beyond resources such as these. On a smaller scale, you can promote a supportive and inclusive environment by doing something as simple as striking a conversation with an individual diagnosed with ASD, or asking them how their day is going. When we are friendly to each other, we set the benchmark for social acceptance.

What is this year’s theme?

In 2024, World Autism Awareness Day will be adopting the theme of “Moving from Surviving to Thriving,” highlighting the journey of individuals with autism towards not just survival, but flourishing in their daily lives. This year’s theme underscores the importance of recognizing the potential and capabilities of autistic individuals, aiming to shift societal perceptions from mere acknowledgment to active support and empowerment.

What is this color for Autism Awareness Day?

The color for World Autism Awareness Day, and for autism awareness in general, is blue. We at Key Connections encourage you to take a picture of yourself wearing your best blue shirt, sweater, and/or jacket, and post it in solidarity with the autism community—don’t forget to hashtag #autismawareness and #keyconnections in your caption! 😄
